Lesson 1: Tamil Nouns and Pronouns

1. Introduction to Tamil Nouns

In Tamil, nouns are words that represent people, places, things, or ideas. Tamil nouns have some unique characteristics:

  • They can be singular or plural
  • They don't have grammatical gender (unlike some other languages)
  • They can take case markers to show their role in a sentence

Let's look at some examples:

மரம்

Pronunciation: maram

Meaning: Tree

வீடு

Pronunciation: vīḍu

Meaning: House

2. Plural Forms of Nouns

To form the plural of most Tamil nouns, we add the suffix கள் (kaḷ) to the singular form:

மரம் → மரங்கள்

maram → maraṅgaḷ

Meaning: Tree → Trees

வீடு → வீடுகள்

vīḍu → vīḍugaḷ

Meaning: House → Houses

Note: Some nouns have irregular plural forms, which we'll learn about in future lessons.

3. Tamil Pronouns

Pronouns are words that replace nouns in sentences. Here are some common Tamil pronouns:

நான்

Pronunciation: nān

Meaning: I

நீ

Pronunciation:

Meaning: You (informal)

நீங்கள்

Meaning: You (formal/plural)

அவன்

Pronunciation: avan

Meaning: He

அவள்

Pronunciation: avaḷ

Meaning: She

அது

Pronunciation: athu

4. Using Nouns and Pronouns in Sentences

Let's see how nouns and pronouns are used in simple Tamil sentences:

நான் வீட்டிற்கு போகிறேன்.

nān vīṭṭiṟku pōkiṟēn.

Meaning: I am going home.

மரங்கள் பெரியவை.

maraṅgaḷ periyavai.
