Lesson 3: Literary and Poetic Tamil

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 3 of Module 2! In this lesson, we'll delve into the rich world of literary and poetic Tamil. Tamil literature has a long and illustrious history, dating back over two millennia. We'll explore some classic works, poetic forms, and literary devices that make Tamil poetry and prose so captivating.

1. Classical Tamil Literature

Sangam Literature

The Sangam period (300 BCE - 300 CE) produced a wealth of Tamil literature, including:

  • எட்டுத்தொகை (Eṭṭuttokai) - Eight Anthologies
  • பத்துப்பாட்டு (Pattuppāṭṭu) - Ten Idylls

Example from Kuruntokai (part of Eṭṭuttokai):

யாயும் ஞாயும் யாரா கியரோ
எந்தையும் நுந்தையும் எம்முறைக் கேளிர்
யானும் நீயும் எவ்வழி அறிதும்
செம்புலப் பெயனீர் போல
அன்புடை நெஞ்சம் தாம்கலந் தனவே.

This poem beautifully describes the union of two lovers, comparing their love to the mixing of red soil and rain.

2. Poetic Forms

Venba

வெண்பா (Veṇpā) is a classical Tamil poetic form with strict rules:

  • Four lines (for Kural Venba)
  • Specific metrical feet (cīr)
  • Rhyme scheme

Example from Thirukkural:

அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.

Translation: "As the letter A is the first of all letters, so the eternal God is first in the world."

3. Literary Devices

Ullurai Uvamam

உள்ளுறை உவமம் (Uḷḷuṟai Uvamam) is a unique Tamil literary device where a comparison is implied rather than explicitly stated.

Example:

கருங்கால் வேங்கை காமர் தூவி
பொன்னின் அன்ன புதுமலர் உதிர

Here, the falling of golden flowers from a dark-trunked Venkai tree implies the heroine's tears falling on her dark skin.

Conclusion

Congratulations on completing this introduction to literary and poetic Tamil! You've taken your first steps into the vast and beautiful world of Tamil literature. Remember, appreciating and understanding these works takes time and practice.
