Lesson 4: Advanced Cases and Postpositions

Welcome to the final lesson of Module 3! In this lesson, we'll delve deeper into Tamil cases and postpositions. These elements are crucial for expressing complex relationships between words in a sentence and conveying nuanced meanings.

Tamil has eight cases, and we'll explore some advanced usages of these cases:

a. Instrumental Case (-ஆல்):

Used to indicate the means or instrument by which an action is performed.

அவன் கத்தியால் மாங்காயை வெட்டினான்.

(avaṉ kattiyāl māṅkāyai veṭṭiṉāṉ.)

He cut the mango with a knife.

b. Locative Case (-இல்):

Used to indicate location, but also time or circumstance.

நான் காலையில் படிப்பேன்.

(nāṉ kālaiyil paṭippēṉ.)

I study in the morning.

c. Ablative Case (-இலிருந்து):

Indicates movement from a place or time.

அவர் சென்னையிலிருந்து வந்தார்.

(avar ceṉṉaiyiliruntu vantār.)

He came from Chennai.

Postpositions in Tamil add specific meanings to nouns and pronouns. Here are some advanced postpositions:

a. மூலம் (mūlam) - through, by means of:

இணையம் மூலம் நாம் உலகத்தைப் பற்றி அறியலாம்.

(iṇaiyam mūlam nām ulakattaip paṟṟi aṟiyalām.)

We can learn about the world through the internet.

b. குறித்து (kuṟittu) - regarding, about:

நாங்கள் புதிய திட்டம் குறித்து விவாதித்தோம்.

(nāṅkaḷ putiya tiṭṭam kuṟittu vivātittōm.)

We discussed about the new project.

c. நோக்கி (nōkki) - towards:

நாங்கள் கடற்கரை நோக்கி நடந்தோம்.

(nāṅkaḷ kaṭaṟkarai nōkki naṭantōm.)

We walked towards the beach.

Cases and postpositions can be combined to create more complex expressions:

அவர்களுடைய வீட்டிலிருந்து கோயில் வரை நடந்தோம்.

(avarkaḷuṭaiya vīṭṭiliruntu kōyil varai naṭantōm.)

We walked from their house to the temple.

Here, we see the genitive case (-உடைய), ablative case (-இலிருந்து), and the postposition வரை (varai - until) used together.
