Understanding and using idioms and proverbs will greatly enhance your fluency and cultural understanding.

Let's start with some common Tamil idioms:

• கண்ணுக்கு மை எழுதுவது போல (kaṇṇukku mai eḻutuvathu pōla)

  Literal: Like applying kohl to the eyes

  Meaning: To do something with great ease or expertise

  உதாரணம்: அவர் இந்த வேலையை கண்ணுக்கு மை எழுதுவது போல செய்து முடித்தார்.

  Example: He completed this work as easily as applying kohl to the eyes.

• வாயில் வெல்லம் கரைக்கிறது (vāyil vellam karaikkiṟatu)

  Literal: Jaggery is dissolving in the mouth

  Meaning: To be extremely happy or delighted

  உதாரணம்: அவள் தேர்வில் முதல் மதிப்பெண் பெற்றதை கேட்டதும் அவளது தாயின் வாயில் வெல்லம் கரைந்தது.

  Example: When she heard that her daughter got the first rank in the exam, she was overjoyed (jaggery dissolved in her mouth).

Tamil proverbs often contain deep wisdom and life lessons. Here are a few important ones:

• அவசரப்பட்டு அமுதமும் உண்ணக்கூடாது (avasarappaṭṭu amutamum uṇṇakkūṭātu)

  Literal: Don't eat even nectar in haste

  Meaning: One should not rush even in doing good things

  உதாரணம்: நீ முடிவெடுக்கும் முன் நன்றாக யோசி. அவசரப்பட்டு அமுதமும் உண்ணக்கூடாது.

  Example: Think carefully before making a decision. Don't eat even nectar in haste.

• கற்றது கைமண் அளவு, கல்லாதது உலகளவு (kaṟṟatu kaimaṇ aḷavu, kallātatu ulakaḷavu)

  Literal: What is learned is a handful of sand, what is yet to be learned is the size of the world

  Meaning: One's knowledge is limited, but there's always more to learn

  உதாரணம்: நாம் எவ்வளவு கற்றாலும், கற்றது கைமண் அளவு, கல்லாதது உலகளவு என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

  Example: No matter how much we learn, we must remember that what we've learned is just a handful compared to what's left to learn.

It's important to use idioms and proverbs in the right context. Here are some examples:

• அவன் கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்த புதிதில் கஷ்டப்பட்டான். ஆனால் இப்போது எல்லாவற்றையும் கண்ணுக்கு மை எழுதுவது போல செய்கிறான்.

  He struggled when he first joined college. But now he does everything as easily as applying kohl to the eyes.

• நமது திட்டத்தை நிறைவேற்ற அவசரப்படாதே. அவசரப்பட்டு அமுதமும் உண்ணக்கூடாது என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்.

  Don't rush to complete our project. Remember, one shouldn't eat even nectar in haste.
