1. Basic Verb Structure
Tamil verbs typically consist of a root and endings that indicate tense, person, number, and gender. The basic structure is:
Verb Root + Tense Marker + Person-Number-Gender (PNG) Suffix
Example with the verb "to eat" (சாப்பிடு - sāppiḍu):
- சாப்பிடுகிறேன் (sāppiḍukiṟēṉ) - I eat
- சாப்பிட்டாள் (sāppiṭṭāḷ) - She ate
- சாப்பிடுவார்கள் (sāppiḍuvārkaḷ) - They will eat
2. Tense Usage
Present Tense
Used for actions happening now or habitual actions.
நான் தினமும் காபி குடிக்கிறேன்.
Nāṉ tiṉamum kāpi kuḍikkiṟēṉ. (I drink coffee every day.)
Past Tense
Used for actions that have already occurred.
நேற்று நான் சினிமா பார்த்தேன்.
Nēṟṟu nāṉ ciṉimā pārttēṉ. (I watched a movie yesterday.)
Future Tense
Used for actions that will happen in the future.
நாளை நான் சென்னை செல்வேன்.

3. Aspect and Mood
Continuous Aspect
Used to indicate ongoing actions. It's formed by adding கொண்டிருக்கிறேன் (koṇḍirukkiṟēṉ) to the verb root.
நான் படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்.
Nāṉ paḍittuk koṇḍirukkiṟēṉ. (I am studying.)
Imperative Mood
Used for commands or requests. The verb root is used for informal commands, and உங்கள் (uṅkaḷ) is added for formal requests.
வா! (Informal) / வாருங்கள்! (Formal)
Vā! / Vāruṅkaḷ! (Come!)
4. Negative Forms
Negative forms in Tamil are created using the word இல்லை (illai) or மாட்டேன் (māṭṭēṉ).
- நான் போகவில்லை (Nāṉ pōkavilla) - I didn't go
- நான் போகமாட்டேன் (Nāṉ pōkamāṭṭēṉ) - I will not go
5. Conditional Forms
