Lesson 1.2: Relative Clauses in Tamil

Introduction

Relative clauses in Tamil are an essential part of complex sentence structures. They allow us to provide additional information about a noun without creating separate sentences. In this lesson, we'll explore how to form and use relative clauses in Tamil effectively.

1. Formation of Relative Clauses

In Tamil, relative clauses are typically formed using relative participles. These participles are derived from verbs and function as adjectives modifying the noun they describe. The basic structure is:

[Relative Clause] + Noun

The relative participle endings in Tamil are:

  • -um (Present/Future)
  • -a (Past)

Example:

பாடும் பறவை அழகாக இருக்கிறது.

Pāṭum paṟavai aḻakāka irukkiṟatu.

The bird that sings is beautiful.

Here, "பாடும்" (pāṭum) is the relative participle modifying "பறவை" (paṟavai).

2. Types of Relative Clauses

a. Subject Relative Clauses

These describe the subject of the main clause.

நேற்று வந்த பெண் என் சகோதரி.

Nēṟṟu vanta peṇ eṉ cakōtari.

The girl who came yesterday is my sister.

b. Object Relative Clauses

These describe the object of the main clause.

நான் வாங்கிய புத்தகம் சுவாரஸ்யமாக இருக்கிறது.

Nāṉ vāṅkiya puttakam cuvāracyamāka irukkiṟatu.

The book that I bought is interesting.

3. Negative Relative Clauses

Negative relative clauses are formed by adding -āta to the verb stem.

படிக்காத மாணவன் தேர்வில் தோற்றான்.

Paṭikkāta māṇavaṉ tērvil tōṟṟāṉ.

The student who didn't study failed the exam.

4. Complex Relative Clauses

Tamil allows for embedding multiple relative clauses within a single sentence, creating complex structures.

நேற்று நான் சந்தித்த, பாரிசில் வசிக்கும் பெண் ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற எழுத்தாளர்.

Nēṟṟu nāṉ cantita, pāricil vacikkum peṇ oru pukaḻpeṟṟa eḻuttāḷar.

The woman who I met yesterday, who lives in Paris, is a famous writer.
